About the Program

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo’s Recovery Program, Mustangs For Recovery, was founded in 2018 by Davis Henegar, a junior undergraduate student going through his own recovery journey in San Luis Obispo, California. Mustangs For Recovery is under the Student Affairs umbrella, specifically within Campus Health & Wellbeing. The tenets of Mustangs For Recovery tout recovery as a journey and not a destination. Mustang’s For Recovery’s purpose is to offer alternatives, support, community, and events geared toward s students in recovery. Meetings are offered twice a week in a conference room on the first floor of the Health Center to accommodate meetings of small to large groups. Our program is considered mid-sized with the capacity to grow in the future. We offer meetings based both on abstinence-only and harm-reduction models. Mustangs For Recovery hosts monthly social events that range between movie nights and potlucks to kayaking. In memory of Davis Henegar, who passed away in 2021, each quarter, students in recovery can apply and earn the Davis Henegar Memorial Scholarship. As this is a student led and organized recovery program, with two paid student lead positions, all students who are seeking recovery support, or are sober-curious may join recovery meetings, programming, and social events. Newcomers and other individuals that may not be sober-curious or in recovery but are still looking for sober-friendly events may join monthly socials.

The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) is the only association exclusively representing collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) and collegiate recovery communities (CRCs), the faculty and staff who support them, and the students who represent them. ARHE provides the education, resources, and community connection needed to help change the trajectory of recovering student’s lives. We are a network of professionals, administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and policy makers.

A Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a college or university-provided program that includes a supportive environment within the campus culture. CRPs reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from addiction/substance use disorder. It is designed to provide an educational opportunity alongside recovery supports to ensure that students do not have to sacrifice one for the other.

The ARHE Website is currently undergoing updates. While we anticipate minimal disruption, please email mack@collegiaterecovery.org if you experience any issues with the website and we apologize for any inconvenience.
