Joanna Timmerman, MA and Dee Singley, PhD presented on “Implementing the Social Model of Disability to Support Students in Recovery,” where they explored how higher education professionals can apply the social model of disability to better assist students in recovery from addiction or mental health challenges. Drawing from their extensive experience in disability services, the speakers discuss practical strategies to shift institutional focus from individual impairments to creating accessible and inclusive environments. This programming was made possible by the Center for Addiction Recovery Support (CARS), a national SAMHSA-funded initiative dedicated to advancing recovery support nationwide. CARS provides training, technical assistance, and innovative resources for individuals, organizations, and institutions supporting recovery.

As a partner organization, the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) partners with CARS to expand technical assistance, best practices, and institutional guidance for collegiate recovery programs (CRPs). Together, we are equipping higher education institutions with the tools and expertise needed to build, sustain, and grow recovery-supportive environments on their campuses.
