Binghamton University’s Campus Recovery Support Group was founded in Spring 2021 as a joint initiative between students in recovery, the University Counseling Center (UCC) and Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS). The CRSG is located within the Division of Student Affairs. The mission of the CRSG is to connect students who are living a substance-free lifestyle, who are sober curious, and/or who are supporting a family member in recovery, with like-minded peers. The CRSG currently has dedicated office and meeting space on campus. The University also offers chemical free housing within all but one residential hall. The CRSG is considered a small, developing program. Two full-time staff members within UCC and HPPS assist with program administration, and one part-time graduate assistant is dedicated to CRSG responsibilities. The CRSG meets formally through UCC once a week, social gatherings are held on a regular basis throughout the academic semesters, and volunteer opportunities for facilitating Recovery Ally Trainings are provided multiple times a semester. Student interested in attending the formal UCC CRSG meetings are expected to maintain abstinence, and to disclose if a relapse occurs. Any student currently in recovery or interested in pursuing a sober lifestyle is welcome in the CRSG space and to connect for peer support.
