Description:

Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their well-being, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential. When we define recovery, we are referring to recovery from any addictive or compulsive behavior. Recovery is not limited to alcohol and other drugs, but may include use of the substances outlined in the sections above.

SDSU’s collegiate recovery program is officially recognized by the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) and offers a variety of recovery-related resources for students. The Well-being & Health Promotion department offers one-on-one recovery coaching. The sessions provide an opportunity for students to talk through what’s going on, where they are at, and where they’d like to be in managing their behaviors in order to reach their own personal wellness goals. Coaching requests have come in from a variety of avenues – through Counseling & Psychological Services staff, referrals from faculty, direct student requests, or through the one-on-one request form on the Well-being & Health Promotion website. SDSU also hosts a one hour SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) Recovery meetings once a week. The meeting is designed to assist students in or seeking recovery. There is also Recovery at State, a Recognized Student Organization (RSO), focused on establishing an inclusive, supportive, and sustainable collegiate recovery community on campus. The organization’s mission is to assist students in recovery and their allies by raising awareness, reducing stigma and offering support. Recovery at State is available to students in recovery, students considering/seeking recovery, and allies of the recovery community. For additional information regarding SDSU’s collegiate recovery program, please contact the Well-being & Health Promotion department.

The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) is the only association exclusively representing collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) and collegiate recovery communities (CRCs), the faculty and staff who support them, and the students who represent them. ARHE provides the education, resources, and community connection needed to help change the trajectory of recovering student’s lives. We are a network of professionals, administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and policy makers.

A Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a college or university-provided program that includes a supportive environment within the campus culture. CRPs reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from addiction/substance use disorder. It is designed to provide an educational opportunity alongside recovery supports to ensure that students do not have to sacrifice one for the other.

The ARHE Website is currently undergoing updates. While we anticipate minimal disruption, please email mack@collegiaterecovery.org if you experience any issues with the website and we apologize for any inconvenience.
