About the Program

NEVADA’S RECOVERY AND PREVENTION PROGRAM (NRAP)

Founded in 2011, Nevada’s Recovery and Prevention Program (NRAP) provides professional support and peer connections for students recovering from substance and behavioral addictions and student allies who are also choosing a substance-free lifestyle. NRAP, housed within the academic department of the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT) provides an “abstinence friendly” student lounge. Utilizing wellness as its guiding principle, NRAP hosts 12-step meetings daily and offers other psychological, social, and recovery support meetings, etc. The recovery community also holds monthly celebrations, bi-semester BBQs, travel to recovery related conferences, and referrals to other campus services. UNR funds two employees, the Program Director and the Project Coordinator. Through outside funding NRAP employs an Associate Project Coordinator and two student workers. Currently, there is not a housing option for students. With three levels of engagement, the CRP currently has 12 leadership team level members and approximately 30 peer level members who have signed commitment contracts and are actively involved (considered mid-sized by ARHE). Requirements for memberships include filling out an application, meeting with faculty to develop an individualized recovery protection plan, attending a weekly seminar and one other on-campus meeting, maintaining a 2.0 GPA, and being involved in one service opportunity a semester. The third level of engagement with NRAP is through the student organization. This level allows those new to sobriety to gain support, information, and sober social opportunities. While these students receive limited services they often are involved in NRAP’s efforts to promote substance-free and awareness activities throughout the University community as well as to participate in work-force development activities such as peer support specialist and addictions counselor training.

The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) is the only association exclusively representing collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) and collegiate recovery communities (CRCs), the faculty and staff who support them, and the students who represent them. ARHE provides the education, resources, and community connection needed to help change the trajectory of recovering student’s lives. We are a network of professionals, administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and policy makers.

A Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a college or university-provided program that includes a supportive environment within the campus culture. CRPs reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from addiction/substance use disorder. It is designed to provide an educational opportunity alongside recovery supports to ensure that students do not have to sacrifice one for the other.

The ARHE Website is currently undergoing updates. While we anticipate minimal disruption, please email mack@collegiaterecovery.org if you experience any issues with the website and we apologize for any inconvenience.
