About the Program

The West Texas A&M University’s Collegiate Addiction Recovery Education and Support (Buff CARES) program is an abstinence-based recovery program for current or prospective students with at least one (1) year of sustained recovery by the end of their first semester in the program. The Buff CARES program is structured inside the Laura and Joe Street School of Nursing, part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU). Dedicated spaces for the Buff CARES program include recovery housing for students who are interested, as well as dedicated lounge space that includes computers, printer access, meeting spaces, and group space. The building and lounge area are available for program members from 7 am to 10 PM daily. The Buff CARES program has availability for eight (8) students to reside within the recovery dorms per year, four (4) for females, and four (4) for males.

The Buff CARES program is currently small, with less than 14 members, and has a full-time Program Director and a Part-Time Program Coordinator. There is hope that over the next few years there will be other employment opportunities such as student employees and other full-time staff positions. Current program offerings include recovery tailgating events, community service activities, program events and activities, weekly seminars, peer support, and academic supports. The application process includes a program application and submission of a photo and two (2) letters of recommendation about their sustained recovery for at least nine (9) consecutive months, followed by a program interview. To be admitted into the Buff CARES program an individual must be admitted to WTAMU, complete the application process, maintain a 3.0+ GPA per semester, attend a weekly seminar, and enroll in at least 9+ credit hours as an undergraduate, or 6+ credit hours as a graduate student. Newcomers are welcome to join all our community events and once a member of the program, they can participate in every activity the program provides.

Become a member of arhe!

The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) is the only association exclusively representing collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) and collegiate recovery communities (CRCs), the faculty and staff who support them, and the students who represent them. ARHE provides the education, resources, and community connection needed to help change the trajectory of recovering student’s lives. We are a network of professionals, administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and policy makers.

A Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a college or university-provided program that includes a supportive environment within the campus culture. CRPs reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from addiction/substance use disorder. It is designed to provide an educational opportunity alongside recovery supports to ensure that students do not have to sacrifice one for the other.

The ARHE website is under construction as we launch a new membership portal. Please inform mack@collegiaterecovery.org if you experience technical difficulties or need support.
